Dental Insurance

Introduction

Paying for dentist services can be way too expensive, not to mention painful! For this reason, 8 out of 10 of us purposefully shy away from seeing the dentist. However, it does not need to be this way, just with affordable dental insurance, going to the dentist should be pain free!

What does dental insurance cover?

Dental policies typically include benefits for 3 types of care:

  • Preventive care: Routine checkups, cleanings, x-rays, sealants
  • Basic care: Fillings, root canals, periodontal treatment
  • Major care: Crowns, bridges, inlays, dentures

How Dental Insurance Works:

If you don’t have dental insurance, there might be waiting periods. Waiting periods means that you have to wait that long for certain services. (For example : If you need a crown, you might have to wait 6 months before it is covered.) Once you have undergone those waiting services, the insurance would pay for that service at a certain percentage or amount. Many times, dental insurance might not cover certain services for a year or two – this is called a pre-existing condition. As example, missing tooth, significant amount of cracked teeth, etc.

Unfortunately, this means if you see the dentist for this reason, your visit or dental work up will not be covered and you will have to pay the full amount.

One way if you need dental insurance right now and know that you will need dental work is to take a Dental HMO policy. This will require you to choose a particular dentist who takes your insurance. There is no waiting period or pre-existing condition on this policy. There are certain fixed costs for services that are provided (root canals, cleanings, filling of cavities, etc).

However, you can also take a Dental PPO policy. This will allow you to see any dentist of your choosing. If your dentist takes your insurance, the benefits will be much better. You still will need to go through certain waiting periods. You might have to wait until the following month to get started.
